What is a Grade Scale?

  • A Grade Scale determines which letter or standards grade should be used for a Course or Section.
  • If the wrong Grade Scale is assigned to a Course or Section, then students may automatically receive the wrong letter or standards grade.
  • Grade Scales also give a letter or standards grade based on the numeric grade of a student.

Which courses get which Grade Scales?

Please see the table below for a guide of course types and their corresponding Grade Scales.

Note: The names of the Grade Scales cannot be changed in PowerSchool and may not always correspond to the grade level of the courses. Ex: "Report Card 7 and 8" is also be used for Grade 6 classes.

Non-Elective courses for each grade level include ELA, SLA, Math, Science and Social Studies.

Elective courses include any other courses, such as Art, Computers, Music, World Language, Spanish, etc.

What should I do if my Grade Scale needs to be fixed?

  • If you've already been notified that you have affected sections, please proceed with the directions below.
If you haven't been notified that your Grade Scale needs to be updated but you feel that it should based on the table above, please reach out to your school leader so any necessary adjustments can be made before you proceed with the directions below.
  • Once the Grade Scale has been updated on a Course or Section by a School or District Admin, a teacher must Recalculate their grades so that the correct letter or standards grade is assigned to the students.

To Recalculate Grades in my PowerTeacher Gradebook:

  1. Log in to your PowerTeacher Gradebook and go to any Course Section
  2. Select Grading
    Select Scoresheet
  3. Click Settings on the top right
  4. Click Recalculate Final Grades - this will also recalculate Quarter and Semester grades
  5. Check the box for Traditional Final Grades
  6. Check the box for Refresh Assignment Scores (Traditional)
  7. Click the Select Classes box to recalculate for more than one section at a time
  8. Then, Select Other Classes, to ensure that all Sections get recalculated at the same time.
If no change was made to the grade scale for any of the selected Sections, recalculating the grades will have no effect.
  9. Click Recalculate
  10. Now you should see the proper grades reflected in the Scoresheet.
Note: If you overrode any of your student's grades with grades from the old Grade Scale, you'll need to manually replace those with grades from the new Grade Scale
